Cristovam Buarque is known and recognized for his strong performance in education. He published several books in the areas of philosophy, politics, economics, fiction, children's books and novels. Cristovam is a mechanical engineer, economist, educator and university professor. He is the creator of Bolsa-Escola, which was implemented for the first time in his government in the Federal District. He was dean of the University of Brasília from 1985 to 1989. He was governor of the Federal District from 1995 to 1998. He was elected senator by the Federal District in 2002. He was Minister of Education between 2003 and 2004, during Lula's first term. He was re-elected in the 2010 Senate elections by the Federal District, with a mandate until 2018.
